Rotherham clubs named as football tournament participants

Parkgate FC are Rotherham’s highest ranked non-league team.

Two Rotherham-based football clubs have been confirmed as participants in the Teversal FC Pre-Season Tournament.

Maltby Main and Parkgate FC, who both compete in the NCEL Premier Division, are two of the eight non-league teams who will play in the forthcoming championship.

The two-week long tournament has been organised by Nottinghamshire outfit Teversal FC, who play in the NCEL First Division, and will start on Monday 4 July.

The fixture list

Maltby Main will play their first match against Belper Town on Wednesday 6 July and Parkgate FC will face Pinxton FC on Thursday 7 July.

Both of the matches will start at 7.45pm, and the other competing teams are Handsworth FC, Kirkby Town, Staveley Miners Welfare and Teversal FC.

The winners of the first round will progress to the semi-finals, which will be held on Monday 11 July and Wednesday 13 July at 7.45pm.

The final will take place on Saturday 16 July at 3pm, and consolation games for the losing competitors are scheduled to take place on Tuesday 12 July and Thursday 14 July at 7.45pm.

A new tournament

It is the first time that the tournament has been held, although other non-league outfits have held similar championships before.

“Blackwell MW held a similar tournament for [the] last two seasons,” said Kevin Newton, Teversal FC’s Director of Football Administration.

“But [they] are unable to host their traditional pre-season tournament, due to the fact that their Primrose Hill ground is now Alfreton Town’s training ground and the Conference outfit have spent a small fortune on the playing surface.

“So we, at Teversal, took up the mantle, hence the birth of our inaugural tournament. All the teams were selected on the basis that we wanted to have a good standard of game for all playing in the tournament.

“We feel the mixture of clubs allows [us] to offer just that, with it hoped that no team will play against a team from the division they play in.

“It is hoped that it allows all competing clubs to have a minimum of two games against opposition, that will allow them to assess their squads in preparation for the new campaign, and each club will have their own aims of what they want from it.”

A cup victory?

The tournament is a chance for Parkgate FC and Maltby Main to win some silverware, and both teams have had success in cup competitions during recent years.

Maltby Main have won seven cup competitions, since their reformation in 1970, and they also won the Rotherham Charity Cup in 2006.

Parkgate FC, meanwhile, have won three tournaments in their 42-year history, including the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2007.

Dave Platts, Parkgate FC’s Publicity Officer, said: “We were invited to the pre-season tournament and thought it would be a good competitive warm up for the season.

“We have high hopes of progressing in the tournament, but we will be experimenting with the squad, and we have a very busy schedule, so it’s more of a competitive warm up than a serious concern.

“Though, of course, we will be aiming to win the tournament.”

All of the games will be played at Teversal FC’s home ground, the Teversal Grange Sports & Social Centre, and adults will be charged £2 for each game.

Concessions will be charged £1 per match, but there will be no admission charge for any child aged under 16 years who attends with a paying adult.
